A resurgent Newstead Brass just missed out on the podium as a “well directed performance with plenty to commend” gained 5th place in the Midlands Brass Band Championships held at Corby’s Core Theatre on Sunday 26th February.

This result builds on their win at the North East Midlands Brass Band Association (NEMBBA) spring contest two weeks ago.  The band performed Philip Wilby’s ‘Red Priest’ for both contests and were conducted by Martin Heartfield. Martin described the Corby performance as one of the best contest performances he had ever been privileged to conduct.

The midland brass band championships attracted over 70 entries from across the region (stretching from Buxton to Milton Keynes, Shrewsbury to Skegness) in 5 divisions with the action played out over three days.

Newstead played first of the 11 bands in the Championship section on Sunday afternoon with judges Stephen Roberts and Leigh Baker having the task of ranking the performances.  Their deliberations placed the Virtuosi GUS band 1st with Ratby Cooperative 2nd, Derwent Brass 3rd and Desford 4th ahead of Newstead in 5th place.

In the other sections there was success for our local friends Thoresby (2nd in Division 1), Rolls Royce (2nd in Division 2), Shirland (5th in Division2) and Long Eaton (2nd in Division 3).  The Division 4 contest takes place on Saturday March 4th.

A band spokesman added, “The band is buzzing after our best championship section result since 2013.  We’re really enjoying working with Martin Heartfield who has stepped in to direct the band from the start of the year and prepare us for these two competitions and thank those former players who have returned for these contests and friends who have ‘sat in’ on our rehearsals when our regular players have been missing for work or family reasons.  We’d also like to record our thanks to Oddfellows Brass for the loan of a marimba for our rehearsals.”

The band are currently taking bookings for 2023 and 2024 and also have an immediate vacancy for an EEb bass (tuba) player.  Please contact the band secretary on 07914 529936 or for more details.
