Playing first of 15 bands in the First section, Newstead’s performance of the set work Symphony of Marches by Gilbert Vinter held the lead until the 14th performance, by the Enderby Band, overtook them to win the contest and qualify Enderby for the national finals in Cheltenham in September alongside runners up Hucknall and Linby who were the last band to play.

Adjudicators Alan Morrison and John Winterflood summarised Newstead’s performance, led by musical director Jim Davies as: “This is a performance you can be proud of” and “A good overall performance… that I enjoyed.”

A band spokesman commented: “We’re naturally disappointed to just miss out on the national finals and an immediate return to the championship section after last year’s relegation, but the result puts us in a really good position to push on for automatic promotion next year. It also reduces some potential ‘fixture congestion’ with our autumn calendar already including concerts marking the centenary of the Eastwood Collieries Male Voice choir and the life of local composer Eric Coates as well as competing in the Bolsover Festival of Brass and aiming to regain our place in the British Open Brass Band Championships.”

Newstead Brass would like to thank the Kirkby’s St. Wilfrid’s and Hill Methodist churches for providing additional rehearsal facilities in our contest preparation.  A concert in aid of local ‘good causes’ is being planned at St. Wilfrid’s in May as part of our thanks.

Newstead’s next concert is As Bold as Brass at All Saints Church in Ripley on Saturday 6th April where they will join the Brassington, Middleton and Wirksworth (BM&W) band.  For more details on this and other future Newstead Brass activities please visit our website or call 07914 529 936 (evenings preferred).
