Newstead Brass took a well-deserved third place in section 1 of the Bolsover Festival Brass held at the Heritage High School, Clowne on Sunday 6th October and streamed around the globe. There was also an added bonus with the ‘best soloist’ award for principal euphonium Alex Seedhouse.

The event attracted around 50 brass bands, each playing a 20-minute programme aiming to catch the ear of the adjudicator.  Newstead’s section 1 programme opened with Steven Ponsford’s ‘Let There be Light’ and continued with the cornet solo ‘Sometime, Somewhere’ featuring principal cornet Sarah Peasley. A journey on Pat Metheny’s ‘Last Train Home’, featuring Alex Seedhouse, followed before a musical trip to musical director Jim Davies’ homeland with the ‘Legends of Cyfarthfa’.

Having just missed out on promotion to the Championship section earlier this year, the band took the opportunity to additionally perform in the Championship section at the festival.  Unlike a number of other bands also playing more than once, Newstead chose a different programme for their second ‘set’ which featured principal trombone Tim Mossad and flugel Blake Tague before getting the audience clapping along with their final piece, a Mardi Gras-inspired setting of the Battle Hymn of the Republic.  The band gained a credible 10th place from 15 competitors.

Newstead Brass’ next performance will be for the Eric Coates Society annual concert at Hucknall Central Methodist Church on Saturday 19th October from 2.30 pm.  The band will be featuring pieces from local ‘King of Light Music’ Eric Coates alongside reprising parts of their prize-winning Bolsover performance and other band favourites. Admission is £5; please contact 0115 963 4662 for more information.

The band currently have opportunities for a cornet and a euphonium player. Please contact the band secretary on 0115 968 0563 or 07914 529 936 to book the band or express interest in the playing vacancies.
