Martin Heartfield

Newstead Brass confirmed the appointment of Martin Heartfield as Musical Director in April 2024. With an illustrious banding career spanning over thirty years, Martin brings a wealth of experience and a deep passion for brass bands to the role.

Newstead Brass had already worked with Martin for the 2023 and 2024 NEMBBA and Midland Regional Contests and the 2023 LBBA contest with results lifting Newstead Brass to 76 in the world rankings at 1st April 2024, their highest position since 2015.

A band spokesperson commented, “We are delighted to welcome Martin to our team on a full-time basis. His extensive experience and musical expertise will undoubtedly continue to enrich our performances and inspire our players. We look forward to building on the successes we have achieved with Martin over the past few months and are confident that under his leadership, Newstead Brass will reach new heights.”

Martin originally studied the Trombone under the guidance of Peter Gane at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was a member of The National Youth Orchestra and European Youth Orchestra, where he performed under some of the world’s leading conductors.

Martin has had a long and illustrious career in the brass band movement, conducting and adjudicating brass bands, winning many prizes at all levels of band competitions. Martin’s conducting career has led to spells as M.D with The Yorkshire Imperial Band, Blidworth Welfare Band, Thoresby Colliery Band, Nottingham City Transport Band, Desford and in his early career two bands in the home counties, namely Aveley Band and the Welwyn Garden City Band.

Martin worked at the Brunts Academy in Mansfield for over 20 years as Director of Music, Director of Creative and Performing Arts and Deputy Head before leaving in December 2015 and is now a self-employed Marketing and Business Education Consultant.

Martin is also vice chairman of AoBBA (Association of Brass Band Adjudicators) and leads their Trainee Adjudicator Programme.
