Newstead Brass is delighted to welcome a number of new and returning players as they prepare for the upcoming Bolsover and Wychavon Contest Festivals under the baton of recently appointed MD David Holling.

The cornet section is strengthened by the arrivals of Mandy Holling on co-principal cornet and Margarita Loizias on solo cornet.  Mandy has played with several championship section bands across the midlands and South Yorkshire including Derwent Brass and Carlton Main Frickley band. Margarita joins after progressing through the cornet section at Hucknall and Linby, most recently on repiano cornet.

The middle of the band is enhanced by the return of Richard Shaw on solo horn following his relocation into the local area. Since stepping aside from Newstead in 2018, Richard has been concentrating on ensemble work but we’re very pleased he’s making the return to ‘full size’ banding.

The lower band welcomes Tom Goodfield on EEb bass and Bob Craddock on bass trombone.  Recently married, Tom joins from Burbage (Buxton) and has previously played with the City of Bristol band. Bob, a former member of the much-missed Ransome Band, returns to the area after time abroad and we’re glad he’s chosen to join Newstead. Both have already demonstrated what fine additions they are to the band.

Completing the new band line-up is Emily Hall who rejoins the percussion section to expand the team to meet the ever-expanding requirements of recent concert and contest pieces.

These new players join the band at an exciting time re-establishing itself in the midlands championship section and quickly developing with its new MD David Holling.  We express our thanks to those taking on new positions within the band and to those who have had to leave us (for now) due to work, family and study commitments or relocation.

We would also take this opportunity to place on record our thanks to former musical director Jim Davies for his leadership and guidance and wish him well in his future projects and activities.

Newstead Brass is still on the lookout for a BBb bass player to help provide the solid foundations to drive the band forward.  Please contact us if you’re interested.
