The group were formed as Newstead Youth band in Spring 2001 and are led by Paul Whyley, an experienced member of the Newstead Brass. Their development surpassed all expectations both in numbers and quality with regular contributions to concerts across the region. Although membership is open to players of any age most of the band are under 18 years of age. After gaining experience performing in support of the Newstead Brass, they now perform at concerts across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire and started entering competitions in ‘section 4’ in late 2005. A third place at the 2006 Midlands championships took them through to the section 4 national finals in Harrogate at the first attempt , a feat they repeated in 2007 leading to promotion to division 3 from January 2008. The band changed its name to ‘Newstead Abbey Brass’ from January 2008 to more accurately reflect the band with a number of mature players joining to help with the teaching of the younger players and provide stability as players move away to further and higher education.
The band’s emphasis will remain on youth development and new or developing players (of any age) are always welcome to join and are invited to attend rehearsals on Thursday evenings.
